The difference between Type 1 and Type 2 is the bank charter number is printed next to the serial number on the Type 2. Lastly the serial number no longer has the suffix letter printed.
The National Currency program, signed into law by Lincoln in 1863, allowed banks to deposit funds into the United States treasury and have 90% of that value printed with the banks name on the currency. Over 14,000 charter banks participated over time with 1929 being the last year (in the $5 bill denominationi). 1929 was the only year that National Currency was printed in the small size. Obviously the smaller the bank the smaller the funds and the smaller the bill counts that were printed. Small issue bills can be very rare.
